Who are the best players in the North Central region? This is an open thread to discuss All-Region nominations, All-Freshman nominations, coaching awards, and more. Stay positive and keep it civil.
Tristan Thilmany (#4) and Max Meyer (#18) for Saint John’s. Tristin is an all time elite pure offensive handler. Name a throw he has and he is elite at range. 60 yard hammer easy, cross field into the wind scoober swing easy. Offenses want him defenses fear him. Max meyer is the fastest player in d3 college ultimate. Put 2 or 3 on him hill outrun you. Put these 2 together and you have and unstoppable offense.
Grinnell’s Will Norry. Not much of a question about it. He is the single most reliable handler in the region–to play with him is to play on easy mode. Each time he catches the disc, his pump fakes are accompanied by a chorus of “shooter” calls from the opposing sideline. He can launch a dime of a backhand or flick all the way down the field but can also play elite, consistent small ball when the winds of our region are blowing. He simply cannot be left off this list.
I play for Macalester, and will avoid nominating any players from our team, although I strongly believe we have several players deserving of all-region recognition, and expect others in the region agree.
I will limit myself to players on teams that we played at conferences & regionals.
Starting with St. Thomas, I think #22 (their big lefty handler) deserves recognition. This was, probably, the best post-season I’ve seen from St. Thomas, and he (along with their other lefty handler), are largely to thank.
Will Norry on Grinnell is also obviously great, and should be on any all-region team. They have some other guys who are good too, if they hadn’t forfeited the 3rd place game I’d have a better memory of their team.
There a lot of Olaf guys that I think are deserving. First, #77 (Max?) is definitely one of the best throwers in the region, if not the best, and really seemed to lead their offense. Jonas is really really good. I think Grant #33 also stood out all season as an athlete. A couple other names that should be in the running: Cade #7, Owen #9, and #1, who, if he is a freshman, was definitely one of the best rookies in the region.
CHOP is so deep that it’s hard to single out players without naming too many. Obviously, though, a lot of their guys deserve all region. I didn’t see their game against Olaf at sectionals, but it’s really impressive to come back from that result and retain their bid at regionals. I think Nathan (Frank? #43) is one of the best players in the region. Danny Shope is one of the best athletes and defenders in the region. Tomo? (I don’t know jersey number) seemed to be on the field for all of their important points, and is really good on both sides of the ball. For a last name, Isaiah (I don’t know his number, I think they call him Dash? maybe that’s someone else) got a lot of blocks, initiated their offense frequently, and was maybe the best player on the field for the last point in the GTG. I think he’s a rookie, and should be in the running for the best rookie in the region.
First Team All Region looks something like this for me (with some effort to spread it between teams):
Owen Suelfow (Flat Earth)
Kyle Suelflow (Flat Earth)
Nathan (CHOP)
Isaiah (CHOP)
Jonas (Olaf)
Max (Olaf)
Will Norry (Grinnell)
Everyone else need to post now and don’t just say guys from ur team
I fell down the CUT rabbit hole a bit while watching one of their streamed games against Cal and ended up finding out about CHOP, Carleton College’s d3 open team. I don’t often follow d3 frisbee but they had a few major standouts, namely Dash Brenner, brother of Bodhi Brenner who I recently shouted out on the Southwest thread. Dash is so fun to watch, particularly his unstoppable under cuts paired with his very solid throwing and great IQ. Definitely one to watch will be utterly dominant in d3 for the coming few years. Go Dash!!!
Hi there! As a diehard berzerkers fan, we got absolutely demolished by the likes of CHOPper Dash Brenner in the game to go. Dash is a freshman with the heart of a racehorse, the IQ of a champion mathlete, and the legs of an Olympic cyclist. He could not be stopped in the open field and frankly it would be tempting just to give up on defense trying to go step for step. All region.
Have to agree Rebecca! Especially after watching chubby Ellis Newhouse on CUT all year - getting to pivot to CHOP and watch a fired up Dash Brenner has been a treat!
#77 (Max) from Olaf here, hoping to provide a pretty unbiased perspective but first have to shout-out some great rookies from the Zerks this season. These guys were a large part of making this season so special:
Ian Westerberg: fought his way onto our uni line right from the start and is an absolute game-changer on both sides of the ball. Some of the best bids in the region and already plays like a seasoned vet.
Caleb Hanse: Started all spring for us after playing frisbee for the first time in the fall. Great game sense and got blocks in huge moments. He will simply outrun you.
Murphy Galvin: I forgot he was a rookie for most of the season due to his impressive array of quick release throws and cutting IQ. An absolute rock on our o line the entire spring who makes waves when given the chance.
Owen Monge: Another new player to frisbee who impressed with his athleticism all year. Great work ethic and IQ, and also came up with some blocks in key moments this year.
Leo Benson: Incredibly quick defender with a huge wingspan who has improved tremendously throughout the season. Don’t test him in the deep space, and don’t try to go one on one with him.
Bjorn Lief: An impactful leader on many of our lines, running the show with big hucks and quick inside shots. Absolutely essential to our offense off of a turn.
Oskar Nunemacher: A very wise decision maker and highly consistent thrower off of a turn who reads the game at a very high level. Also randomly will uncork chest height bids.
Zach Bollman: I don’t know how any 6 '5 giant who bids as much as this guy does, much less catches them at the rate which he does. He will also put a roof over you and your extended family.
Onto All-Region ideas. I won’t mention any Zerks in this section despite believing we have several guys in contention:
Mac Owen Suelflow and Kyle Suelflow: I can’t tell the difference between them but they are both elite throwers and athletes, making 50/50 balls 85/15 balls. Big shout-out to one of them for playing regionals with an injury and maintaining a very high level of play throughout.
CHOP Frank and Danny: These are the guys who you put your best defenders on and who you game plan around. Both versatile cutters and throwers who can beat you in a variety of ways.
Grinnell Will Norry: We never played them, but breaking seed and getting this amount of shout-outs can’t be an accident.
Honorable Mentions:
Dash from CHOP was essential to their game-plan and has takeover abilities. CHOP also had a pickup from Karls this year who had the best mark I played against all season.
Jeevs from Mac adds a lot of complexity in playing against them due to his throws, quickness, and great handler defense. #69 Lian was also a great competitor and defender, with great spirit to top it off.
St. Thomas Tall lefty handler: Incredibly unspecific but everyone who has played them will know exactly who I am referring to because he can be that dominant.
Johnny Schlaefer from Winona is a huge game changer for them with big throws and unending intensity.
Final All-region list:
Owen Suelflow (Mac)
Kyle Suelflow (Mac)
Danny Shope (CHOP)
Nathan/Frank (CHOP)
Will Norry (Grinnell)
2 Zerks among who has been mentioned.
This has been long-winded but last big shout-out to Zerks parents/fans! They were the true champions all season and our season was made significantly more special due to them.
Coach from St. Thomas here!
I’ve seen a couple people mention our tall lefty handler, and I wanted to start off by saying his name is Jack Karlen, and the other lefty handler mentioned is Owen Dam Jack is a freshman and will be a name in these forums for years to come.
As far as other teams go, Owen and Kyle Suelflow on Mac are obvious choices. There’s not much else to be said there that hasn’t been said already, just a nightmare to coach against.
On Winona, Jonathan Schlaefer is also someone you have to plan for as a coach. The kind of player who if he’s on the field, you might have to change your line a little bit to include someone who might be able to guard him.
On St. Olaf, I’ve been told by my other coach that Owen, Carter, and Cade are all DAWGS, and that whole team feels so deep, I have no choice but to believe him.
Ben from Grinnell here.
Grinnell: Will Norry (11) is that guy on the field, as has been mentioned. Wish you all could see the work he puts in behind the scenes too- equally valuing and prioritizing every single member of our community. Nathan Starhill (37) and Theo Bonin (3) are both rookie of the year candidates. Nathan took the hardest matchup most games, was a constant easy under, and led our team in minutes. Theo was a seamless fit as our second o-line handler, and is a name you’ll all come to know very soon. Gus Braun (21) and Eli Boeding (17), our two big blonde cutters, also each had a great season. David Rhoades (25) is your favorite players favorite player- the big man chucks plastic with grace and restraint. Duncan Lambert (31) stepped up in a big way this season, playing an excalent second fiddle to Will as an O-line handler for much of the season, and probably made your day if you talked to him on the sidelines. Also really want to shoutout or coaches Nick and Bex. Their impact on our tournament results are immense. It’s no coincidence that we’ve broken seed each of the past two years.
CHOP: Frank/Nathan took over chris’s job from last year (taking my ankles despite my best efforts to retain them). Danny and Dash are getting a ton of hype for good reason. Tomo and the big curly haired guy whose number and name I can’t recall were both phenomenal defenders and ball movers on the turn. Shoutout whoever pulls on chop.
Mac: Kyle and Owen are ballers. The fact that Sanjeev is a freshman is scary for the region- kid slings puck and is shifty as fuck. Also big ups to #3 and #69, both were quick with mad tech.
St. Olaf: Cade, Max, and Grant are dope. Whole team had some crisp clap catch acoustics, will be teaching that to Grinnell freshman this fall.
Tech: Heavy struggling with identifiable details here, but the O-line center handler with a number in the 40s and your captain in the pajama pants are both sick.
Luthor: Simon, Peter, and frequently shirtless guy are dope. Shoutout to the whole team for playing that number of minutes, crazy shit.
