PDGA Revises 2018 Competition Manual After Member Feedback

The Professional Disc Golf Association announced a number of revisions to its 2018 Rule Book and Competition Manual last week after receiving member feedback from its initial release in October, the organization said on its website.

The most significant change was to section 1.10, which details distribution of prizes. “After many hours of conversation and deliberation,” the statement said, the PDGA Board of Directors upheld a motion that resulted in the suspension of item 1.10.A and an edit to item 1.10.B.

The suspended item 1.10.A will remain visible in the Competition Manual, but will appear struck through with “Suspended for 2018” appended:

1.10.A: Any player accepting cash in a Pro division at a PDGA-sanctioned event (except leagues) must be a current Pro-class PDGA member. If they are not a current Pro-class PDGA member, and wish to accept cash, the membership fee for either their new Pro membership, upgraded membership (if a current Amateur), or renewed Pro membership is taken out of their winnings by the Tournament Director and forwarded to the PDGA. Suspended for 2018
The suspension of item 1.10.A for 2018 alleviates the issue of requiring a pro-class PDGA membership of high-level amateur competitors who would like to test the waters in Open divisions. The edit of item 1.10.B now allows amateurs playing in Open divisions to accept merchandise in lieu of cash at B- and C-Tier events, but not at A-Tiers or higher. The October revision of the item forbade amateurs from accepting merchandise in lieu of cash at all levels.

While these revisions will be in effect throughout 2018, the announcement also said that the PDGA Board of Directors and Competition Committee will spend the year addressing additional feedback about these two items from members, with an expectation of further refining them in 2019.

Beyond the two main revisions, the updated Competition Manual contains a wealth of additional revised information that impacts both competitors and tournament directors. Take a look at the full document here.
