Who are the best players in the Ohio Valley region? This is an open thread to discuss All-Region nominations, All-Freshman nominations, coaching awards, and more. Stay positive and keep it civil.
Hello! I play for Haverford/Bryn Mawr Sneetches, and I just want to say, if you are reading this, you probably play DIII women’s, and we don’t get enough coverage! So you should definitely shout out your teammates and opponents on here so we can keep building each other up and growing coverage.
On my own team, big shoutouts to our captains, Amy Tse (#8), May Courtney (#7), and Clara Shapiro Morton (#33). They are all incredible leaders and absolutely amazing at frisbee. Phoebe Hulbert (#31) is huge for us and I believe one of the best handlers in the division. A player who has really stepped up this year is Sonia Nicholson (#23), she is a fierce defender and will do whatever it takes to get the disc on offense. Our underclassmen are absolutely incredible and it’s been so much fun to watch them develop this season.
At Regionals, we only played Kenyon and Scranton, so I can’t speak too much for other players in the region, but props to Scranton for showing up with a small roster and making it to the finals. We had to make a lot of adjustments to counter their style of play. We learned that they usually play mixed, and this is their first time playing the series as a women’s team, so it was really impressive to see them so successful so early. Kenyon was really fun and challenging to play, they had some strong handlers who weren’t afraid to take deep shots, and a couple cutters who were great at reading and skying.
I also want to shoutout and thank our coaches this year, Jason, Tucker, and Linda. Adding Tucker and Linda was amazing for our team, and they have already brought so much knowledge and energy to their roles. I know our team is extremely sad to see Jason leave next year, as he is one of the main reasons we have earned a spot at Nationals these past three years. We so appreciate all three coaches’ hard work and dedication to our team!
Katie (#35) from Scranton here! I have a few shoutouts for all region:
Haverford/Bryn Mawr: realistically this whole team could be mentioned here, but I have two in particular I would like to nominate.
#7 was an absolute beast on both offense and defense. Her speed coming down on the pull made throws that are typically automatic ones that we had to be careful with. She was always positioned well on offense, and her quickness combined with her field awareness resulted in a lot of scoring from her
#45 also deserves a shoutout. Zoe’s deep backhands are dangerous, and her awareness through the mid layer made her a tough person to keep the disc away from
Additionally, I have to shoutout the Sneetches coaching squad. The players made Haverford a difficult team to beat, but their coaches made it nearly impossible.
Kenyon:
This whole team was lovely and so much fun to play against. I have to shout out Soren for her leadership and skill. She played incredibly strong defense against us, and is clearly a crucial part of their offense
I wanted to shoutout a few players on Scranton as well
Rosie (#61)- she is easily one of the quickest players on the field and is often able to beat her mark with her upline cuts. She somehow never gets tired despite playing every point of the weekend (both at conferences and regionals). She plays a smart wing, taking away a large portion of the other team’s offense which is telling by her 12 D’s at conferences and 13 Ds at regionals. She took her new handler role in stride this year and accumulated 13 assists at conferences and 14 assists at regionals.
Trish (#81)- Trish is another crucial part of both our offense and defense. She is someone else who somehow never gets tired despite also playing every point of both weekends. With a small roster, this is instrumental to our success. Trish is a player who I feel confident in throwing to every time, as her speed, ability to read the disc, and confidence in her catching is unmatched. She scored 18 of our goals at conferences (almost half) and is our team’s best deep deep. With an impressive 17 D’s at conferences and 23 D’s at regionals, our team relied heavily on Trish to stop the deep hucks.
Both Rosie and Trish are key parts of our offense and defense, and I feel they deserve to be recognized in the all-region discussion
Lastly, I wanted to acknowledge all the teams we played. The spirit, competitiveness, and kindness in the Ohio Valley was so welcoming to our new team which was really appreciated!
