Not everyone is off to Europe (or Alaska, which feels like another continent) just yet.
Of the four A-tiers on US soil this weekend, the CCR Open in Michigan is getting the most attention, with all respect to the Titan Open.
The Open field is only about 50 players, but more than 25% of the division is rated 1000 or better, including Paul McBeth, Garrett Gurthie, and Michiganers Reid Frescura and Andrew Marwede who may be familiar with the course at Burchfield Park. The Open Women’s field is similar, with more than half of the 18 player division rated over 900. Sarah Hokom and Jessica Weese headline the bunch, but don’t sleep on Liz Carr-Sypien.
Both Open divisions will play three rounds, two on Saturday with a final 18 Sunday, on the Renegades Trail layout, formerly known as Devil’s Den. The same park hosted last year’s United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship. MPO will play all long tees, while FPO plays short pads on holes 3, 6, 7, 11, 13, and 15.
“Renegade is a beautiful course and well maintained,” said Steve Meyer in last year’s USWDGC preview. “There is a great use of the land and it is fairly open, although there are places where you must hit lines. The course has both sunken and raised baskets, which is a neat addition.”
“Renegades Trail, or Devil’s Den, plays more similarly to a ball golf course where there’s sand traps and OB,” said Meg Fittro in the same article. “It’s really cool, the final hole is the signature hole with an elevated basket and a fountain.”
