South Carolina-based equipment manufacturer Salient Discs – the company that sponsored and promoted the controversial American Disc Golf Tour that aired on ESPN3 in May – has filed for bankruptcy.
According to the filings, Salient is aiming for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which allows for a liquidation of nonexempt property. Per the United States Courts website, if a discharge is granted in the proceedings, individual debtors are generally exempt from personal liability, meaning the owners of the company should be safe from creditors going after their personal assets.
The move is another step in dubious history of the American Disc Golf Tour, which debuted in May boasting a veritable disc golf revolution, but was met with resistance after eschewing cooperation with the PDGA. Salient already had a poor customer service reputation, and the tour received even more backlash after very publicly disputing an entry-fee refund with one of the players signed up for its marquee event, the American Open.
Creditors in the bankruptcy filing include Salient owner Chris Kilgus, American Disc Golf Tour co-founder Steve Boucher, and Scher Shot Productions, a North Carolina-based video production outlet. Both of the websites for Salient Discs and the American Disc Golf Tour are still operational, but their Facebook accounts appear to have been shut down.
