On a day when it was hard not to focus on the adverse conditions, it didn’t stop some players from posting impressive opening rounds at the 41st Annual Wintertime Open in La Cañada Flintridge, California.

In her second event of the season, Catrina Allen came out in the morning with a fire already lit. Her 3-under par 59 is three strokes better than 2018’s lowest FPO round score and is unofficially 996-rated. Allen, who did not play in last year’s event, is three strokes ahead of defending champion Jessica Weese, who posted a 971-rated even par 62 and sits in second. Lisa Fajkus rounds out the top three.

It wasn’t a score as low as we’re used to seeing from Open leaders, but a 1037-rated, 8-under par 54 from Austin Hannum was enough to give him the outright lead by one stroke. Four players — three rated 988 or lower — are tied in second at 7-under par 55.

The ballyhooed lead card of Paul McBeth, Eagle McMahon, Anthony Barela, and Steve Rico wasn’t able to get much going. McBeth and Rico’s 4-under par 58s were best of the group, and McMahon is a couple behind them in a tie for 24th at 2-under par 60. While still unofficial, the 1004-rated round is McBeth’s lowest since a 972-rated second round of the 2018 Utah Open.

Hannum, Bryan Vagi, Logan Riding, and Håkon Kveseth are one lead card for round two Saturday.
