Getting into the open fairways of Sunset Hills for the second round of the Ledgestone Insurance Open saw the Open Women’s field pick-up those birdies that proved elusive at Northwood.
- With another round close to 1000-rated, Paige Pierce shot the hot round on Friday with a 7-under par to push her lead to seven strokes over the field at 11-under par overall. She wasn’t able to get the eagle on the par 5 hole 6, but led the division by coming in under par on 50% of the holes. Per usual, Pierce is pacing the event with her driving — first in strokes gained from tee-to-green, finding Circle 1 in regulation. On Friday, however, her Fierce putter was the difference maker. She’s 24-of-26 from C1X through 36 holes and leads in strokes gained putting at over 6.8 strokes.
- Just a stick behind Pierce’s hot round at 6-under was Missy Gannon, who moved up two spots on the leaderboard to 4-under overall. The Des Moines Challenge champ got her day off with a bang, hitting from 50 feet on hole 1, and only collected one bogey on hole 12, the second hardest hole to par on the course, with a two-putt on the tough green.
- Sarah Hokom also had her only over par score of Friday on hole 12, and her otherwise clean 5-under par moved her up a spot into solo third at 3-under par total. Through 36 holes, Hokom is second to Pierce at finding C1 in regulation at 36% but will need to clean up her putting during round three to fend off a close field.
- Making the biggest jump up the leaderboard on Sunset was Alexis Mandujano with a 5-under round moving her up eight spots into a tie for ninth at 1-over par. She connected on four C2 putts on the round, all for birdie, which was best in the division.
