The PDGA is working to make sure that its newest Major — the Champions Cup, coming in 2022 — deserves its name.

Last week, the PDGA announced that tournament champions from many professional and select amateur events will receive automatic qualification to next spring’s Champions Cup.

The winners of all of the 2021 PDGA Elite Series events, which includes the National Tour and Disc Golf Pro Tour stops, as well as all MPO and FPO Majors will receive an invite to the Champions Cup. Additionally, seven Euro Tour events, a number of national championships around the world (including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Malaysia), and FA1 and MA1 champions from Am Worlds, USWDGC, US Amateurs, and the NADGT Championships will receive invites.

The PDGA told Ultiworld Disc Golf that the invites will not drop to a second place finisher if the winner of an event has already qualified, though the process is subject to change. More events may be added to the invitation-eligible list later this year.

The Champions Cup is also expecting to offer its remaining spots to players via ratings-based tiered registration. The total field size has not yet been determined.

The tournament is set to be held from April 13-17, 2022, at the International Disc Golf Center in Appling, Georgia. The tournament will feature four rounds of stroke play with the top four finishers in each division advancing into a bracket-style match play playoff.
