PDGA Acquires The Disc Golf Scene

The Professional Disc Golf Association has acquired The Disc Golf Scene, a website known for its tournament registration platform and associated uses, the organization announced yesterday. Financial details of the transaction were not immediately disclosed.

The Disc Golf Scene has more than 80,000 users and serves as a hub where players can not only sign up for events, but also coordinate league and club activity and trade equipment. The merger will find The Disc Golf Scene founder Pete Crist joining the PDGA as lead developer, resulting in the organization now having its own tournament registration system.

While the PDGA has encouraged use of The Disc Golf Scene as its preferred tournament registration platform since 2013, tournament directors will still be able to choose their system of choice. The two websites will run independently in the short term, PDGA Technology Director Steve Ganz said, with long term goals still to be determined.

Ganz also said he sees Crist as his eventual successor.

“Really, the greatest benefit is the addition of Pete Crist to the PDGA technology team,” Ganz said in an email. “I only ever planned on a 2-3 year tour of duty with the PDGA and I’ll begin my sixth year on January 12th, 2017. I promised Pete I would stick around for at least a year while he gains his footing before I start planning my exit.”

A mobile app and other services are eventually planned as part of the collaboration as well.
