The Disc Golf Pro Tour today announced the addition of the Resistance Discs Open to the 2021 DGPT Silver Series. The three round tournament will take place at Trojan Park in Rainier, Oregon June 11-13, the same weekend the canceled Beaver State Fling PDGA National Tour event was originally scheduled for.
“We wanted to fill the hole left in the schedule to keep the top players in the world coming to the Portland area,” said Jeff Korns, Resistance Open Tournament Director. “It’s been a dream from the beginning of the event to elevate this tournament to the elite tour level and we’re stoked to be able to show everyone what our team can do with this opportunity.”
The Resistance Open was added to the PDGA schedule as a B-tier after the BSF’s cancelation this month. As a Silver Series stop, the event will have $10,000 of added cash and players will earn Tour points. Registration for the 2021 Resistance Discs Open is not yet available.
“The disc golf community in Oregon is fantastic, and we are very pleased to be able to work with Jeff, Scott [Withers], and the Resistance Discs team to fill a gap and keep players competing at a high level while touring in the Pacific Northwest,” said Jeff Spring, DGPT CEO & Tour Director. “Additionally, we thank the PDGA for their flexibility and support in elevating this event.”
Withers is TD’ing with Korns and won the inaugural Resistance Discs Open in 2020, albeit on a separate set of courses. In 2021, both the MPO and FPO divisions will play all three rounds at Trojan Park.
“Last year was the first of the event and was held at two courses in the Eugene area, about two hours south of Portland, on some of the more challenging courses in that area,” said Korns. “These courses aren’t suited for a tour event due to lack of cell coverage at one course and overall difficulty of both. For the foreseeable future I see the event taking place at Trojan Park. It’s one of toughest and most tour-ready courses in the Portland area but still outside of the primary counties in Portland, so COVID restrictions are significantly reduced. Resistance Discs is working on a championship level course in the Eugene area but it’s still a couple years out from completion.”
Trojan Park is described as a “scenic, challenging course that plays around the cooling ponds of the de-commissioned Trojan Point Nuclear Facility… with 11 holes playing over or adjacent to water” on Disc Golf Course Review, and was used during 2014 Pro Worlds in Portland, but only for one round each by the MPO and Masters divisions.
As for plans for the course, Korns said there will be a lot of work put in before the June tee-off.
“We’ll be using a slightly modified layout used by the Oregon State Championships and what was used at Worlds,” said Korns. “We’re working closely with the local club to make some tweaks and improvements to the course, including a few new pin locations and a few new tee pad locations.”
